Winter in Mallnitz - a sunny winter destination!
With its location at an altitude of over 1200 meters, the mountain peaks above 3000 meters and on the border of the north and south sides of the Alps, Mallnitz is a snow-sure but also sunny destination.
Be enchanted by the beautiful snow landscape and experience that a winter (sports) holiday can also be special.
Skiing on the Ankogel and the Molltaler Glacier
The Ankogel ski area is named after the 'home mountain' of Mallnitz, the Ankogel. Here you will find about 14 km of slopes for all levels. The ski area is small but nice; it is a manageable ski area between 1200m and 2600m, where both the advanced skier and the beginner will feel at home. In addition, there are good off-piste opportunities on the Ankogel!
The season in the Ankogel ski area runs from mid-December to well into March and is considered one of the most snow-sure ski areas in Carinthia. The lifts of the ski area are a few minutes' drive from Mallnitz and can also be reached with the (free) ski bus that runs between Mallnitz, the Ankogel and the Molltaler Glacier.
The Molltaler Glacier has 17 kilometers of slopes and is an average of about 330! open days a year for skiing - it is one of the most snow-sure destinations in the Alps with its altitude between 2200m-3100m. The Molltaler Glacier offers something for everyone, has some wonderful fast slopes, but unlike other glacier ski areas, it is certainly not a ski area for beginners only.
The Molltaler Glacier is about 20 minutes drive from Mallnitz; but you can also reach the area from Mallnitz (or from the Ankogel ski area) with the free ski bus.
Cross-country skiing, winter hiking and other winter sports
Directly from and around the village there are perfectly groomed trails of various levels of difficulty. Mallnitz is surrounded by 3 valleys between the mountains, allowing for cross-country skiing or ski touring in all directions. Due to the high location, the snow conditions are usually perfect and in addition to the silence you will also experience the crackling snow under your skis. Besides cross-country skiing, you can also enjoy the nature and winter landscape of the Hohe Tauern on foot; the winter hiking trails are well maintained and are perfectly signposted.
In the village you can also (free) skate; do you want a little more challenge and more kilometers to skate? The Weissensee with a 25 km long track can be reached from Mallnitz within an hour!
Finally; Mallnitz has the longest toboggan run in Carinthia - a guaranteed hilarious outing that will not be forgotten.
